Social communications seminar in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: October 19th 2005 -- A Salesian Centenary Research Seminar on Social Communications is being held at Bosco Reach Out, in Guwahati, from October 18 to 20. This two day seminar is being held for the members of the social communication commissions of the provinces of South Asia. 38 members were present at the start of the seminar from the 10 provinces of India and the vice province of Myanmar. During the seminar, which began on October 18 in the evening, Fr. Philip Barjo, Provincial of Guwahati, welcomed the gathering and addressed the participants, dwelling particularly on the letter of the Rector Major on Social Communications (AGC 390). 
The Seminar was inaugurated by Fr. Ivo Coelho, Provincial with responsibility for the Social Communication Sector in the Salesian Provincial Conference of South Asia (SPCSA). He spoke on the aspect of formation in Social Communications focussing on the need to form a habit of reading and writing. Also present for the Seminar is Fr. Paul Puthenangady, General co-ordinator of the five Centenary Seminars that are being held on the National level among the Salesians in keeping with Centenary Celebrations of Salesian presence in India 1906-2006. 
The organisers of the Seminar are the Guwahati and the Calcutta Province and it is being co-ordinated by Frs. P.V. Joseph and Anthony Vayalil. Fr. George Plathottam of the Guwahati Province is the local host along with Fr. K. J.Louis who is the National delegate of Social Communications in India. In the two days that follow the participants will reflect on the Salesian Media Situation in South Asia. There will also be inputs on 'the challenge of Social Communications in South Asia' and 'Creative ways of being more relevant in Social communicaions'. Panel discussions are planned on proposing strategies for the future and workshops for effective Social Communication Ministry.
