Three vocation and evangelisation stories
Vatican City, Vietnam, Chennai: 30 June 2012 --  The common thread might seem episcopal, but it is more a case of vocation and evangelisation.
Two Vietnamese Salesians were ordained priest last week by Archbishop Savio Hon, Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples. The two young Salesians, Fr Dominic Tran Quang Hien, and Fr Joachim Nguyen Thanh Tung, have worked (Practical Training) and studied in Italian provinces and will continue their post-ordination studies there before returning to Vietnam.

Archbishops Francesco Panfilo (Rabaul, PNG) and Timothy Costelloe (Perth. Australia), received the pallium or woollen band or stole made from freshly woven wool, from Pope Benedict XVI at St Peter's Basilica, on 29 June.
The pallium is a symbol of the Archbishop's metropolitan office, binding him closely to the Successor of Peter. The prayer the Pope uses as he places the stole on the Archbishop runs as follows:
May this Pallium be for you a symbol of unity and a token (the word he uses is 'tessera') of communion with the Apostolic See; may it be a bond of charity and a spur of fortitude, so that in the day of the Coming and the revelation of the great God and prince of shepherds Jesus Christ, you may together with the the flocks entrusted to you obtain the stole of immortality and glory.
A 'tessera' is the name given to the small piece of stone that makes up the ancient mosiacs that dot the Eternal City. Even in Italian, today, it is a word which implies an official ID card, or ticket to something, but its 'mosaic' meaning is especially significant in the context of the Church Universal. The ceremony was placed before the celebration of the Eucharist for the first time, obviously to separate it from being confused with the sacramental action.

The opening of the Chennai-based missionary aspirantate, the second such institution opened in Salesian India in the space of a year, is particularly significant not just for India but for the Congregation.  These aspirantates take us back to the Cagliero Institute at Ivrea from whence many a Salesian missionary was sent forth, including many in our own Region.
