Mongolian students graduate to better future

ULAANBAATAR: 25th June 2008 --  Thirty three students from the Don Bosco Technical Skills Centre graduated this week after a three year course.  Their graduation is a ticket to a better life.
Mongolian students have to face hardships unknown in many other parts of the world. It may be a question of whether they can find the money to buy books, or catch a bus. It may be a matter of freezing temperatures which in winter can drop to -50 C, making school attendance an act of heroism! And again it may be the home situation in the 'yurt', overcrowded with a large family and lots of brothers and sisters to disturb study efforts. Or worse, a situation of domestic violence, often alcohol-fueled, which students around the world have to contend with, but which statistics show is endemic to Mongolian society too.
The Salesians of Don Bosco understand the need for good example, passing on the right values and helping young people acquire a profession which will give them good standing.  It is all a way of preventing many of the social ills that afflict families especially in and around Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia's capital. Seven years after its opening, DBTSC has increased its quota of students to around 230. Students may take one of five professional directions: auto-mechanics, carpentry, plumbing, sewing, secretarial. This education plus the moral education they receive gives these young people a chance and indeed is a key to success for coming generations.  It is also the best and most fundamental way to fight poverty.
This year's graduation was another step along that road.
