Rainy season does not deter Cambodian school year opening

PHNOM PENH & POIPET: 12th October 2005 -- Although at the height of the rainy season, 10th October saw the opening of the school year for most Cambodian schools, amongst them the well-established Don Bosco Professional and Technical School in Phnom Penh (1991), and the Don Bosco Centre in Poipet (2003).  There is a third Don Bosco Technical School Centre in Sihanoukville (1999).
    Amongst the new arrivals in Poipet is Fr Albeiro Rodas, recently ordained in Medellin, Colombia, but already prepared for his new mission in Cambodia.  He is now the pastoral animator for the House and tasked with setting up and developing the Oratory in Poipet.  Also new arrivals are three teachers from Phnom Penh, to set up the automotive section.  The three of them are past pupils from the Don Bosco Technical School in Phnom Penh.  
    10-10-2005 was just as special in Phnom Penh.  Between trainees, four Salesians, teachers and other lay staff, 610 souls have set out on their academic year, with opportunities for orphaned and poor youngsters in six vocational and technical skill areas: General Mechanics, Welding, Household Electricity, Electronics, Automative, Printing.  The school community  prepared for its new academic year by focusing on planning, under the title of  'Failing to plan means planning to fail'.  This planning phase produced two corporate mission statements for the school.  The social work section adopted the following as its statement: we commit ourselves to create a harmonious atmosphere where we nurture our talents and initiatives and value our 'face' priorities: fidelity, accompaniment, community, excellence in order to serve others with happiness and commitment.
