Rebirth of a Salesian Parish in Archdiocese of Yangon
by Bro John Peter, published by Fr Will Matthews in SNAP, AUL

YANGON-- Br. John Peter SDB from Burma reports that a Salesian parish has been established again in the Archdiocese of Rangoon. Salesians used to have a technical school and a parish in Thin-gan-gyun area many years ago. It is an exciting news for the Salesians of Burma to be able to minister again the poor in the capital Rangoon. [Note from Fr Will Matthews, formerly of Burma, now member of the Australia-Pacific Province]

The Salesians of Don Bosco have taken over the responsibility of caring for a parish in Yangon Archdiocese. The parish is under the patronage of the Infant Jesus and it is located in Hlaing Thar Yar Township, North-west of Yangon.

The territory is a heavily populated and poor area. But the faithful are dispersed in that broad township, the majority of the people being Buddhist. The parish was established about ten years ago and led by the diocesan clergy. The hand over of the parish took place on Easter Monday. Archbishop Charles Bo SDB presided at the Eucharistic celebration, and after the homily the Archbishop and Fr. Maurice Vallence SDB, the superior of the vice province, signed the contract which covers the agreements between the Archdiocese and the Congregation.

The first Salesian priest in charge of the parish is Fr. Andrew Yan Naing Win. It is a remarkable story for the Salesians in Myanmar, because a Salesian parish has come to exist again in Yangon Archdiocese after some decades.

Please kindly pray for this new Salesian parish so that it may flourish and be of benefit to the people of God, their spiritual welfare and social development.
