Yokohama:  9 students struck by motorist, two died from injuries

YOKOHAMA: 18th October 2005 --  Nine students from Salesio Gakuin, Yokohama, the Salesian middle and high school in the city, were struck yesterday by a vehicle driven by a 23 year old.  The incident occurred in alter morning as the students were returning home from their mid-semester exams.  It appears that the vehicle mounted the footpath at high speed.  The driver later admitted that he had mistaken the accelerator for the brake.
The injured students were brought by ambulance to five separate hospitals.  One student died on admission.  Another, despite efforts of doctors, died later that afternoon.  A third is in a serious condition.  Doctors have amputated both legs.  The remaining injured have sustained various fractures and bruises but are not appear to be in a life-threatening condition.
The Salesian community and the province will appreciate the prayers of readers not only for those who have died in this tragic accident, but also for the families and the entire school community which now has to come to terms with the loss and its circumstances.
