Japan's 'Rome', cradle of Christianity, welcomes 19 new Salesian Cooperators

NAGASAKI: 15th September 2006 -- While today, 15th September, Catholicism's focus is on Rome, as Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone takes his place once again beside his friend and colleague 'Papa Ratzinger' in the capacity of Secretary of State, Japan's 'Rome', the city of Nagasaki on the north-west of Kyushu Island, and cradle of Christianity from the 16th century, has its own celebrations.  Now it is also a flourishing centre for the Salesian Family.  Last Sunday, 10th September, 19 new Salesian Cooperators made their promise, bringing the total number of fully committed Salesian Cooperators in Japan to 124 and the number of centres to 13.
The Nagasaki centre is based on an FMA community, with one SDB in the area.  Fr Furuki is the only SDB resident in the Nagasaki archdiocese, so he is, naturally the SDB delegate for the new unit!  The 19 new Cooperators made their promise in a solemn manner before the Provincial, Fr Puppo, and the provincial delegate for the Salesian Family, Fr Matsuo.  There are an additional 9 aspirants preparing for their promise in the future.  Four Cooperators came from Tokyo with Fr Puppo and Fr Matsuo, to be present and to encourage their brothers and sisters.  Unable to be present, Mr Philip Yu, the regional coordinator for the Salesian Cooperators, wrote from China to congratulate the new members.
