Installation of new provincial for Japan

TOKYO: 25th January 2009 -- The installation of the new Provincial for Japan, Fr Aldo Cipriani, took place at Chofu, Tokyo on the evening of 24th January, Feast of St Francis of Sales. Confreres from throughout the province came in large number for the event. At the conclusion of his homily, the outgoing provincial, Fr Orlando Puppo, read the letter of appointment of the Rector Major, which was then followed by the customary 'Credo' and oath of office by the new provincial.
At the end of the celebration, Fr Cipriani thanked Fr Puppo in the name of all the confreres for his six years of service and sacrifice for the province and the Congregation.

The official ceremonies over, confreres and friends then gathered for a fraternal agape livened up with music and songs and a typically Salesian festive atmosphere. Towards the end of this, the video commentary on the 2009 strenna, already dubbed in Japanese, was shown to those in attendance.
During his first good night as provincial, Fr Cipriani, showing himself quite moved by the event, expressed his determination to carry out the mission the Rector Major had now given him, with the assistance of all the confreres.  and not unlike another recent installation event well-known to the world, he managed to avoid any use of 'I', but made good use of 'we'!
For Japan, then, this installation meant the beginning of events to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Salesian Congregation. The next event will be the seminar on spirituality to take place in February and which will bring many members of the Salesian Family together to deepen their understanding of the message in the Strenna for 2009.

Celebratory events in South Korea

SEOUL: 25th January 2009 -- January in Korea Province always means confreres' retreats, new obediences and professions.  This year the beginning of celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Congregation is the context for all that.
There have been three first professions and five perpetual professions this year.  On 21st January, at the novitiate house in Daejeon, the provincial Fr Stefano Nam presided at the Mass for the Rite of Profession for the three newly professed. The two witnesses were Fr Stefano Yang, director of novices, and Fr Marc Cuvelier, rector of the community. The parents and family of the three newly professed were present.
The perpetual professions were celebrated on 22nd January at the Provincial House in Seoul, at 11 a.m.  The principal celebrant again was the provincial, and the event was attended by a large number of confreres and also diocesan clergy. The parents and family of the five confreres were also present along with many members of the wider Salesian Family and the Salesian Movement.  In fact it was estimated that some 500 people were at this event, which was an effective way to commence the celebrations for the 150th, foster new vocations to the various Salesian family Groups and communicate the spirit of Don Bosco.
