Social Networking: A Friend and An Enemy? (FIS)

CEBU CITY (PHILIPPINES) 27 July 2013- Yesterday, the Archdiocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes- Parish Youth Coordinating Council had conducted its monthly Common Formation, the TGIF (Thank God It’s Friday) with the theme: “Social Networking: a Friend and an Enemy?” The speaker for the said activity was Mr. Kevin Ray Chua, a CIT-U graduate of Bachelors of Science in Information Technology. He graduated last March 2011.
He discussed the advantages and the disadvantages of the social networks and especially Facebook. According to his research, more females are internet users than males. During the session, there arose a question about the internet speed in the Philippines. Again, according to his findings, the Philippines has a slow internet connection because many Filipinos love to download. A particular study shows that Filipino youth activities comprise of the following: using the internet 21.5%, watching TV 13.3%, downloading videos 87%, watching TV via the net 47% and visiting social media sites 95%.
The discussions dwelt also on the popular site that most young people use: Facebook. He shared that there are different kinds of Facebook users based on one's personality type and one's way of using Facebook. He said that social networking has an advantage of helping us connect or communicate with our relatives and friends from afar. On the other hand it has also its disadvantages.
In general, we should be careful in posting our status, comments, videos, photos, and shared materials because others might misinterpret them and cause negative consequences. Also, companies nowadays, assign their Human Resources Department to look into our social network accounts and discover things that can affect our reputation. He reminded us with these grave words: “Bear in mind that what you had posted in the internet can never be deleted.” The young parishioners were happy about the topic discussed and they went home more informed.
