PARANAQUE: October 25 2009 --  Postmodernity have influenced our societies today especially the young. It has not spared the the Salesian Congregation wherein  a new breed of Salesian candidates has been so much exposed to this prevailing phenomenon.
In order to address this challenge in formation, the Philippine North Province under the leadership of Fr. Eli Cruz, Provincial, with the help of Fr. Danny Torres, head of the Formation Commission, convened the first Provincial Assembly on Initial Formation. The event was co-hosted by the Seminaryo ng Don Bosco and the Don Bosco Center of Studies from October 19-23, a historical event for the province.
The assembly aimed to gather the confreres of the formation houses, the Commission on Formation and the Rectors of practical trainees to help improve or form programs to address the needs and challenges of the present trend in formation.
The 5-day assembly tackled postmodernity, family systems, digital and personal media, intercultural dialogue and vision-mission formulation. Experts in the stated fields were invited to help the participants. Among the 5 speakers were 3 Salesians including Fr. Eli Cruz who has been invited on a number of occasions to address key communicators in Church and secular settings in the Philippines.
The aspirants, prenovices, postnovices, practical trainees and students of theology (many of whom are from different provinces) were the subjects of the assembly. They served as providers of input giving the formators the task of reflect on the results of their discussion.
The days included a lectio divina by Fr. Francis Gustilo and ended with a Eucharistic celebration at which the different rectors presided. In the afternoons after the tiring sessions, the 'formandi' together with some formators joined in organized games allowing another form of interactive communication, bonding and get ting to know one other, especially if in different stages of formation.
Fr. Andrew Wong, regional councilor of EAO presided at the concluding mass. The provincials who are members of the curratorium were also present in the assembly.
