Y? Take a peek into The Psyche of Today's Youth to find out

MANILA: 2nd June 2009 -- Just a couple of editions ago (#2426) we mentioned The Spirit of Generation Y...., which Salesians in Australia contributed to.  Now there is The Y Factor: 2009 Yearbook on Filipino Youth, a fully Salesian product published by Salesian Missions Inc., under the auspices of the Salesian Society in the Philippines.  Information on this is also accessible through the official blog at www.y-factor.org.
The Y Factor is over 200 pages-worth based on the latest studies and statistics.  The 'brains' behind its publication is Fr Armand Robleza, who has also cleverly conceived CodeRED Magazine, a magazine which reaches out to youth and their parents at the same time. One notes the publicity for this Magazine neatly tucked away in the pages of The Y Factor.  Good on them! One also notes the way in which Salesian priorities are marked in the organisation of contents (e.g. the first chapter is 'Today's youth are keeping the faith') but in a way that does not detract from the overall impression that this is a complete picture of issues surrounding youth in the Philippines - and for that matter anywhere - today.
One really has to say that this is a magnificent production - there are no two ways about it.  It would grace a coffee table anywhere - but those who have conceived it hope it will do far more than that, of course.  It is a full-colour glossy production aiming to be a source book of information, success stories, issues about Filipino youth.  It is intended for decision makers, CEOs, educators, political leaders, opinion shapers, NGOs and any individuals or groups who are involved with youth in Filipino society.
But it should go further than this.  One repeatedly hears, especially at gatherings of communications experts from the Salesian context around the world, of the need for the latest research on the youth situation in order to be able to communicate the Good News effectively.  And in the light of the Rector Major's announcement just 24 hours ago of his 2010 Strenna's key message: bringing the Gospel to the young, it is material such as this which help bridge the gap that might seem to exist between the two in today's world.
The Y Factor is written about Filipino youth to help adults understand what  and who they are dealing with, but 'the Y factor' is universal enough, as demonstrated by The Spirit of Generation Y and many other studies besides. P 1000 (Pesos) is approximately USD21 and well worth spending on this particular item.  You could contact monsdb@yahoo.com from outside the Philippines (Bro Raymond Callo, other wise known as 'Mon') to see to a copy.  It would be an excellent investment for each province in the Region - at least!
