'Stars' of humble service in China Province

HONG KONG: 22nd January 2009 -- Recalling Bethlehem's 'star' as sign that God calls each according to his or her character, our HK correspondent offers a fine list of humble 'stars' in recent times:
Fr Matthew King awarded badge and certificate by the Vatican: the badge and certificate of Pope Benedict XVI has been awarded Fr Matthew by the Prefect of the Sacred Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples. The award was in appreciation of Fr Matthew's work for Church and Pope and his contribution to work and study.
Fr Peter Ho to be awarded the Badge of Merit in Charity, in Macau: the Macau Government named Fr Peter Ho for this award on New Year's Day in recognition of his personal contribution to society and to Macau SAR (Special Administrative Region). Fr Ho runs the Don Bosco Youth Service Network. The award also demonstrates government appreciation of the Don Bosco service generally. This has already been recognised some years ago too when Fr Francis Hung and Yuet Wah College received the Badge of Merit in Education. Yuet Wah goes back 67 years, and Fr Hung 27.  Not only Macau has recognised sterling Salesian work for the young.  Some years ago too, Fr Peter Newbery received the Medal of Honour from HK SAR, and then the Servant of Peace Award from the UN. He capped all this with an Honorary Doctorate by HK Institute of Education in 2006. (All of these events were reported at the time in austraLasia and can be easily searched in SDL).
China Province has expressed its willingness to offer news to austraLasia via its Salesian Schools Central Secretariate, and we rejoice too in that.
---------
And on another note, we also welcome six novices from FIN who have joined the austraLasia list of recipients.
