Salesian History Seminar, EAO

BATULAO: 28th November 2008 -- The Second Seminar on Salesian History of the East Asia-Oceania Region is being held at Batulao in the Philippines. It began on 24th and concludes today, 28th. The theme is The Implantation of the Salesian Charism in the Region: Ideals, Challenges, Answers, Results. The seminar, organised under the aegis of ACSSA (Associazioni cultori di storia salesiana) is a sequel to the first one on The Beginning of the Salesian Presence in East Asia, held four years ago in Hong Kong.
A Mass of the Holy Spirit at which Fr Andrew Wong, Regional for EAO, presided, placed the entire proceedings under the protection of the Almighty. Besides Fr Wong, Fr Eligio Cruz, FIN Provincial, addressed participants in the conference hall and officially inaugurated the seminar.
The seminar, attended by 33 participants from 9 countries involves SDBs, FMAs and members of other groups founded by Salesians in the Region.  It also welcomed the participation of India. A total of 17 papers, including three key-note addresses on the missionary climate in the Church, the Congregation and in South Asia, painted diverse scenarios of implantation of the Salesian charism in the extremely varied cultural, social, political and religious setting of the different lands of the Asia-Oceania region, and threw light on the challenges encountered by missionaries, the solutions they devised, and the final outcomes.
Besides serious scientific work in the aula, a pilgrimage to Caysasay, the first and principal Marian Shrine in the Philippines, and a historical tour of Manila offered participants a taste of Philippine culture and religiosity. The Eucharist on the final day was celebrated with Bishop Pat Buzon SDB of the diocese of Kabankalan.
