There is movement in the region...

23rd January 2010 -- The following news item is really several items; there is a lot happening around the Region (and a lot happening in Rome too as the Salesian Family has arrived in its hundreds for the Spirituality Days and the General Council moves to winding down its 'winter' session.
Let's begin with the Haiti response.  Provinces around the Region have begun to indicate the nature of their response to the Rector Major's appeal.  In some instances the province or delegation (as in the case of PNG/SI) have given an indication of a pledged amount.  China, Vietnam, ITM, Australia have all indicated to Fr Wong what they are doing and how they are going about it.  In the case of Australia-Pacific, the Provincial Council has decided an overall target, an amount that it has pledged as a minimum, but asked the Houses to send in what they can towards that target - if those amounts don't reach the overall target, the province will top it up.  If the amounts reach the target or exceed it, the Province will add to it anyway!  The Provincial has written to his confreres indicating that this item must feature in the Lenten penance that is chosen annually in accordance with C.74.
No doubt everyone is following the updates through ANS or, where something new is involved, through this medium. There are confreres in the Region who are in direct contact with one or more of our Salesians in Haiti, confreres they have known previously.  These letters, sometimes written in struggling English but all the more heartfelt for that, give us a more personal insight into things.  Here is a quote from one:

In my family my little brother slept under his office where he is working, thanks God he is alive with some pein, and we hope that everything will be fine soon;in my school some of my pupils are dead...,it's a terrific moment for us.Now we are just strugguling to live day after day. Please i beg you all to keep us in your prayer because we do need that more than ever. Now in our country most of the catholic Churches in the capital are destroyed and our archibishop and his general vicar are dead in the capital, a lot of religious are dead...In the capital maybe we still at the most 3 or 4 churches. A lot of students passed away because it was a time for the Universities to work...it's terrific. Please help us by your prayer to the good Lord. Take care and God bless

Those who receive SSCS News (which should be sent out shortly after this aLa edition goes out) will be interested to follow the communications logistics involved in this event. As one can imagine it is a massive exercise with many, many facets. If you donpt get the monthly SSCS News - a communications exercise in itself from the SC Department, but would like to, just ask.
New Delegate for Mongolia.
There is movement of another kind in the Region too. Signs of growth, in fact. Mongolia has been part of the VIE province since our presence there began. In the previous General Council session it was approved as a Delegation (under Vietnam province, obviously). Now the Rector Major and his Council have approved Fr Andrea Trung Tin Nguyen as the Superior of the Delegation.  Fr Andrea is currently the Rector in Darkhan, near the Russian border.
New Delegation of Indonesia
The Rector Major and his Council have approved Indonesia as a Delegation under the Vice Province of ITM.  The Vice Province has its 'provincial' office in Dili, but the new status accorded Indonesia acknowledges the growth that has taken place in that part of the vice province.
