DBTI Henderson looks to empowering women in school and workplace

HONIARA: 30 March 2010 -- Empowering women in school and the workplace will be the focus of a Don Bosco Technical Institute (DBTI) theatre production to be held as part of the school’s 10th Anniversary celebrations in August 2010. The production is a joint project along with an eight week, fully funded, ‘Introduction to Carpentry Workshop’ for girls, starting on 24 April 2010.
Organisers of the production and workshops, Australian Volunteers International (AVI) volunteers and DBTI teachers Elmarie Pareezer and Chris Yarham, said the project has been made possible through funding provided by the AVI/Planet Wheeler Community Grants Scheme (CGS).
“As part of this joint project with Chris, we are aiming to raise awareness of study and career opportunities for women and promote Millennium Development Goal Three: Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women,” Elmarie said.
Solomon Island Development Trust’s drama group, SEI, will be assisting by way of scripting and developing a play to illustrate the importance of providing opportunities for females to study and work in all industries.
The performance will take place during DBTI’s 10th anniversary celebrations in August 2010, and will also be recorded for radio broadcast.
To encourage more girls to enrol and study at DBTI, Chris will be facilitating an Introduction to Carpentry course, to take place over eight Saturday’s throughout 2010, commencing on 24 April.  “The workshops are responding to the local carpentry industries call to provide more employment opportunities in the sector,” Chris said.
“Traditionally, DBTI courses are largely attended by male students, therefore the institute is working towards altering this gender imbalance by way of a theatre production and a series of carpentry workshops for girls.”
