Vietnam counts its blessings

HCM CITY: 7th August 2007 -- No less a personage than the Vice Provincial of Vietnam has written in to 'give thanks to God' for the many blessings experienced by the Vietnam Province in the past year, and to express confidence in the future.  The letter focuses on the vocations efforts which have yielded a good harvest. Currently the Province has 150 of its members in initial formation!
With the new school year just weeks off (it begins in September for Vietnam) here are some of the numbers that the Province is looking at. In fact our correspondent writes, 'What's new? Here's what's new':
    new pre-novices: 40
    new novices: 19
new first professions: 20 (two Brothers amongst this group)
    new perpetual professions: 10
    new deacons: 8
    new priests: 12
    New missionaries ad gentes: 7
    new canonical houses: 3
The total number of communities in the province is 18 and the total number of confreres 275, so large communities!
Father goes on to say: "It is really a demanding development (he is referring to the formation demands), because a total and balanced development requires enhancing not only the quantity but the quality as well. The province recognised that it should focus on some crucial points to deal with the problem. GC26's 'Return to Don Bosco' has come in time to meet those needs. With vocation promotion and formation ont he one hand, the province has tried to improve its mission to the young on the other. The recent provincial chapter drew up a simple but feasible and credible programme to serve the young, especially the poor and most in need.
Setting the heart of every confrere on fire in this field, encouraging the communities eagerly to find out the new ways to fulfil their commitment, the province hopes that this relaunching will bring further fruitful harvest into the future". JM Hoa Hung sdb
