A gentle Salesian with a lovely smile

By Fr. Will Matthews, SDB

Melbourne, Australia, 28 August 2017 -- A much-loved priest, a highly respected Salesian and a gentleman, Fr Joe Pulis SDB, passed away peacefully at Cabrini hospital in Melbourne, Australia on Monday 28th August. He was two days short of 85 as he would had celebrated is 85th birthday on Wednesday 30th August 2017.

Fr Joe was a Salesian for 65 years, and a priest for 55 years. He spent most of his Salesian life in teaching ministry at various Salesian colleges including Salesian College Sunbury, Salesian College Brooklyn Park, Dominic College Tasmania, and last post being the Nagle College in Bairnsdale in Victoria. He retired from teaching at the end of 2017 as the Salesians moved out of Bairnsdale due to the shortage of confreres.

Fr Joe was instrumental in teaching second languages during his ministry teaching Japanese and Italian in addition to Religious Education studies in a number of Salesian colleges.

He was a keen fisher who spent regularly with his younger brother, and many fellow Salesians who were keen to drown worms in the water.

Fr Joe was a great cook with a special interest in extreme spices, the hotter the better.

He was known as a gentle Salesian with a lovely smile who would welcome anyone into his life and ministry.

The requiem Mass for Fr Joe Pulis will be celebrated at St Margaret Mary’s Salesian parish in North Brunswick in Victoria on Tuesday 5th September at 11:00 AM, and the burial service will take place at the Salesian cemetery in the Salesian College ground in Sunbury.

May he rest in peace, amen!
