All activity of the Mystical Body directed to the attainment of this goal is called the apostolate, which the Church carries on in various ways through all her members. '+Description+': The Christian vocation by its very nature is also a vocation to the apostolate, but it was only after Vatican II that a more complete awareness of this came to the fore, where the laity were concerned. This was emphasised within the Salesian magisterium by the 24th General Chapter on the role of the laity.

Perhaps the more challenging term, however, is not the noun form, but the adjectival form ''apostolic'', challenging not so much in terms of understanding its basis (linked to the Apostles and therefore the origins of the Church on the one hand, 'sent out' on mission, on the other), but for its wide extension. In Salesian literature we can identify at least 80 nouns qualified by this term! Without listing them all, here are some: See, (cf Apostolic See, project, community, life, Exhortation, activity, consecration, zeal, mission, letter, spirituality, creativity, forces, movement, plan, heart, family, dedication, priority, Delegate, Vicariate....

We can see that this extension refers to authority and structure on the one hand, and something charismatic on the other. The Salesians are a clerical religious institute of pontifical right "dedicated to apostolic works", we have an "apostolic project", give life to groups of "apostolic action", feature "apostolic creativity" as part of our distinctive style.

Perhaps it is just a question of noting that a term which is applied so widely can give rise to varying interpretations, more so in the institutional and structural field than the charismatic.
