Phillipines

(:nl:)* Philippines North. Province of St John Bosco

In 1951 three Salesians arrived in the Philippines and now they number 205. They work in 22 centres plus six foundations in Papua New Guinea, which belongs to the North Province. Comprising three houses of formation, plus one formation house in Papua; 18 parishes schools and youth centres attached and three separate Youth Centres. There is a Retreat House, a Street Children Centre, a Publishing and Printing House and a hostel for students.

Don Bosco in the Philippines has made its impact on the technical and professional formation of young people. This is what the Salesians are known for. To say Don Bosco is to say technical school and professional schools.

The main difficulties confronting Salesian Apostolates is the lack of personnel. Vocations have dwindled due to the difficulties confronting religious life today.

* Philippines South: Province of Mary Help of Christians

In 1992, the Salesian works in the southern Philippines were formed into a new province, starting with 10 canonically erected houses and seven houses in Indonesian and Timor. Driven by a pioneering spirit and an impressive optimism the Province expanded its horizons and set up new foundations in rural areas. Today there are 16 centres including two in Pakistan with a total of 98 confrere. The beginnings of the Province were humble but characterised by a richness of enthusiasm. Amongst the schools, parishes, homes for boys, youth centres, retreat houses, as well out of school youth training, there is a deep sense of belonging and an all embracing commitment to the poor and the marginalised members of society. Such work is very significant in a nation of great unequal wealth distribution.
