(:nl:)Provincial for Australian Province: Fr. Francis J. Moloney SDB

The Rector Major, Father Pascual Chavez Villanueva, after consulting the confreres of the province, has appointed Father Frank Moloney as Provincial of the Australian province for the next six years. The Australian province includes the Pacific islands of Samoa and Fiji. Fr Moloney succeeds Fr Ian Murdoch who finishes his term of office at the end of the year.

Fr Moloney, born in Australia, has been professor of Scripture in Melbourne, at the Salesian University in Rome, at the Biblical School in Jerusalem and the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome. At present he is teaching Scripture at the Catholic University of America. A former Member of the International Theological Commission, in 2001 he was elected President of the Catholic Biblical Association of America, the first non-American citizen to occupy that post.

He has published more than 30 books on Scripture and a large number of articles in specialist magazines. Among his books, in addition to studies on the Gospels and the religious life, he has written on the Eucharist in the New Testament.

He was recently appointed by Pope Benedict to attend the XI Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops held between 2 and 23 October in Rome as theological adviser.

Fr Frank will take up his duties as Provincial in January 2006.
