---- (:comment Write term as a title in lower case except where upper case or capitals are normally required:) '+Term:+' (:comment Write term on this line, after this comment:) Salesianity '+Definition+': "The term "Salesianity" (Italian: "salesianità") has been in use for some years to indicate a collection of aspects inherent in the spiritual, pedagogical, pastoral, religious and historical patrimony of our life as Salesians of Don Bosco. Don Rinaldi did not use the word; he spoke instead of "Salesian spirit" in a wide and concrete sense which, in fact, referred to the living out of an uninterrupted tradition. It is a reality inserted into daily Salesian life as an "experience of the Holy Spirit" transmitted from one generation to the next". '+Geographical/Regional usage+':

'+Description+': The most authoritative comment on Salesianity is to be found in the already quoted letter of 1989 by Fr Viganò, describing the role of Blessed Philip Rinaldi in developing the Salesian spirit. It had already been given a broad definition in GC21, no. 244: "The Gospel of Jesus Christ, therefore, seen in the style of and in the spirit of Don Bosco, constitutes Salesianity". It is interesting to note that it appears usually in reference to formation (e.g. in the Ratio, several times, as in the case of the intellectual formation of the Salesian priest who, amongst other things, is to be given a "firm grounding in 'Salesianity'", or where it requests the "preparation of experts in Salesianity". Elsewhere it might refer to a specific collection of literature. This is already hinted at in AGC 332: "Despite these, the literature on salesianity in the first thirty years of the present century was rather scarce. You had to dig up the material for yourself, so to speak. It is symptomatic of Don Rinaldi that he was aware of this, and he took it upon himself to remedy the situation as far as he was able". Or, in more recent times, when Fr Chávez is describing the West Europe region in some detail in AGC382 and speaks of the Salesian Publishing Houses in Portugal and Spain (Madrid) as having "specialisation in Salesianity"

'+Context (examples of use)+': "...we have to recognize the fact that he had the gifts, and made use of efficacious means, to be an extraordinary and authoritative promoter of Salesianity". (From the already quoted AGC332)

'+Other notes+': All indications are that the term is a neologism in Salesian SDB discourse, including the fact that it often appears in quotation marks, as "Salesianity". In some documentation it is written with an initial lowercase 's' (along with 'salesian') but this is not considered standard practice.
