PNG national anthem.jpg

By Fr Sylvester Kuli sdb

Boroko, Port Moresby, PNG, 26 February 2025 -- The male residents of Don Bosco Technological Institute dedicated a service to commemorate the late founding father, Sir Michael Somare. This initiative, led by Dormitory Captain Donald Tobata, along with his assistants and prefects, aimed to honor Somare’s legacy, especially in this jubilee year of the nation. The service sought to instill leadership values through community service.

The day began at 6:00 AM with a musical rising, followed by a prayer. The students then gathered their bags, rakes, and brooms before heading to the roundabout near POM Grammar School. There, they conducted a general clean-up that extended all the way to Shorna Store. Afterward, they returned to campus and assembled inside Mary Help of Christians Hall, where they sang the National Anthem.

Following the anthem, Vice-Dormitory Captain Isaac Watehopo delivered a speech on Sir Michael Somare's vision and dedication. He discussed the challenges Sir Michael faced on his journey, acknowledging that it was not an easy path. Despite the difficulties, Sir Michael remained steadfast in his mission to lead the country to its current state. Watehopo emphasized Somare's dream of a strong and proud nation built on the principles of unity, freedom, and justice and encouraged the Bosconians to honor his memory by embodying those same values.

Br. Paul Paiara, SDB, then gave an inspirational talk on the importance of servant leadership. He explained that being a servant leader means stepping forward to do what others might avoid. "Acts of service are contagious, as they change people's perceptions," said Br. Paul. He expressed hope for the country's future, stating that by taking initiative in small acts of service, such as cleaning the streets, individuals can contribute to meaningful change.

The group then observed a minute of silence in remembrance of Sir Michael Somare, followed by a documentary screening about his life and his journey toward independence.

Fr. Sylvester Kuli, SDB, concluded the service by highlighting two key insights from Sir Michael Somare’s life: determination and belief. He explained that a servant leader recognizes the needs of others and steps in to help, even when the task is difficult. He further noted that determination, as exemplified by the Grand Chief, is crucial in leadership, even in the face of doubt. Sir Michael Somare embodied this belief through his unwavering faith in God, which empowered him to lead the nation with conviction and resilience.
