RMG, 21 January 2025 -- Last January 2024 a Study Seminar took place in Hyderabad, India on “sharing the Salesian Charism and Mission with adherents of Neighbour Religions and People of Goodwill”. The seminar was jointly organized by the Formation Sector, Missions Sector and the South Asia Region. The acts for this seminar have just been published by Kristu Joyti Publications, Bangalore, India. It is a precious reflection that will surely be a point of reference also for the Salesian Family in East Asia and Oceania.
During the seminar Fr. Alfred Maravilla was asked to reflect on the role of the SDBs and the members of groups of the Salesian Family regarding the sharing of the Salesian charism and mission with followers of other religions. He insists that “understanding the “faith-vision” of a founder or foundress is important because it provides the “substructure” which gives coherence to his “charism.” The term “founder’s spirit” refers to his interior, fundamental attitude in regard to God, to the Church, and to other members of the congregation. It is transmitted through the founder’s entire person, that is, his writings, personality, “faith-vision,” etc. until it gradually becomes a collective reality, called ‘the spirit of the congregation’. As others join the community, it provides a basis for unity and continuity in the history of the community.
Can the charism and mission of a Congregation be shared with those who are not members of the Congregation, even Catholics? Can it be shared with followers of other religions? His presentation sought to respond to these questions.
