Dili, Timor-Leste, 15 November 2024 -- The annual Regional Formation Commission meeting for the EAO region took place in Dili, Timor-Leste, a beautiful country poor in material but rich in faith and religious vocation. Delegates from all provinces and delegations of the region participated in the meeting facilitated by Fr Anthony Nguyen, Regional Coordinator for Formation and Fr Jose Kuttianimattathil and Bro. Raymond Callo, who is a member of the Formation Sector. The meeting was held in four intensive working days from 9-12 November.
The assembly studied and discussed several ‘hot’ topics arising in formation nowadays such as safeguarding minors and adults (presented by Fr Chris Ford, AUL), criteria and norms for discernment and accompaniment of candidates in different stages of formation, particularly in regards to sexual and affective maturity.
Fr Jose also reported on the process of the revision of the new Ratio which has been commenced from 2020. The final revised version is to be sent to all Salesian provinces for comments before being submitted to the newly elected Rector Major after GC 29 for its promulgation. On the last day of the meeting, the assembly studied the synthesis of the seminar on “Sharing Salesian Charism and Mission with Adherents of Neighbouring Religions and People of Goodwill.” The meeting hall became so vibrant since the topic touches the very “itchy” part of the majority provinces and delegations of the Region where Salesians find themselves a minority in the midst of different great religions and beliefs. In fact, the absolute majority of young people in many of our services are non-Christians.
The EAO Regional Formation Commission meeting came to its conclusion with guidelines aimed at bettering the service of formation in all Salesian settings of the Region. Participants long for the next annual meeting held in Jarkata, Indonesia with eagerness.
