Kokopo, PNG, 27 October 2024 -- On Sunday 20 October, Don Bosco Technical Secondary School celebrated its 31st commencement, honouring 172 graduates. These included 45 Grade 12 students who had completed their national exams and 127 trainees who had finished their National Certificate 2 programs and On-the-Job Training. The theme for the graduation was “Live the Dream of Don Bosco.”
The event began with a Holy Eucharist celebration, presided over by Archbishop Rochus Tatamai, MSC, bishop of the Rabaul Diocese, along with Fr. Moise Paluku, SDB, DBTSS Rector. It was a notable occasion as it marked the Archbishop's first attendance at the Don Bosco graduation.
In his homily, Archbishop Rochus highlighted the Salesians' mission work, from Don Bosco’s legacy to the contributions of Salesians in East New Britain. He urged the graduates to take pride in their identity as Bosconians and reminded them of Pope Francis's own pride in the Salesian family during his visit to PNG. He encouraged the graduates to make wise life choices, emphasizing that their future is shaped by their decisions and sacrifices.
The graduation was graced by various dignitaries, including the Kokopo mayor, representatives from the education department, and leaders from business, industry, and health sectors. The keynote speaker commended the resilience of the graduates and school administration amid challenges. He encouraged graduates to be agents of transformation, honoring the values of respect and service within their communities.
In response, former school captain Ignatius Roka thanked the school for the opportunities it provided and acknowledged the support of teachers, families, and long-serving educators, Mr. Renato, and Anabelle Ortega, who would be leaving the school.
In closing, Fr. Moise, the DBTSS Rector, expressed gratitude to Archbishop Rochus, the Salesian family, and all benefactors for their moral and material support throughout the year. He encouraged the graduates to regard Don Bosco as their home and to prioritize safety, respect, and care for others.
The event concluded on a festive note, with both joy and the bittersweet feeling of farewell after years spent together.
