Thanksgiving and Gratitude to God.
Melbourne, Australia, 6 October 2024 -- The celebration of Australia and Pacific Province Day was held at the Don Bosco Retreat Centre in Lysterfield, Melbourne Australia. In the heart of our Province-Delegation, a vivid tapestry of Salesian communities and works unfolds across various geographical locations, including Glenorchy, Gawler, Darwin, Fiji (Suva), Samoa (Alafua and Salelologa), Massey in New Zealand, Sydney (St Marys and Engadine), Sunbury, Ascot Vale, Brunswick, Clifton Hill, Chadstone, and Lysterfield. In total of 15 Salesian Communities, each contributing uniquely to the mission of the Salesians of Don Bosco in the Province.
Thirty-seven Salesians (Brothers and Priests) were present including one Salesian from Fiji. It was a gathering of thanksgiving and gratitude to God for his abundant goodness, blessings and protection; and to all Salesian confreres in the Province. Adding to the celebration, there were seven Jubilarians: Profession in Years: Father Elio Capra (60); Father Chris Riley (50); Father Joe B. Dinh (40) and Father Taisali Leuluai (25). Priesthood in years: Father Germano Baiguini (50); Father Michael Court (40) and Father Guy Riolo (25). It was also a celebration to conclude the one-week retreat in Lysterfield preached by Father Kevin Dance CP.
During the Eucharistic celebration, Father Peter Hoang (Provincial) gave a homily emphasizing the transformative essence of the Eucharist. He articulated that Jesus invites us to “Receive, give thanks, break, and share,” encouraging a translation of divine nourishment into acts of love for others. Embracing the Eucharist involves relinquishing pride and self-interest to serve those in need, thereby challenging societal norms that favor status over humility. Father Hoang further drew parallels to the life of Saint Francis of Assisi, who, having emerged from a background of wealth and ambition, willingly embraced poverty in his commitment to service. He concluded by urging attendees to embody the “DREAM BOSCO” spirit: Doing, Renewing, Encountering, Amazing, and Moving forward with confidence in our mission of love and service. We are grateful to God and give thanks to one another. Isaiah reminds us: ‘The Lord’s goodness and his marvelous deeds; his great kindness, mercy and boundless goodness and for that we sing praises”.
The celebration concluded with a community dinner. As we continue to nurture our Salesian spirit in our province, we remain united in purpose, motivated by a desire to make a meaningful impact in the lives of the young and the broader society around us. Together, we celebrate each moment and mission, grateful for the presence of one another and the divine love that guides us. Viva Don Bosco!
