Bomana, Port Moresby, PNG, 24 September 2024 -- Animators of the Mary Help of Christians Parish, Sabama Oratory - students from MHCTVET and a few from DBTI, had the opportunity to attend an overnight formation program from the evening of Friday, September 20th, to Saturday afternoon, September 21, 2024, at the Sivarai Namona Pastoral Center, Bomana. The program was organized by Fr. Ambrose Pereira, SDB, Parish Priest of MHC Parish, with the help of Sr. Theresa Trinh Vu, FMA, who has been instrumental in coordinating the students in animating the Oratory programs at MHC parish, Sabama since 2023.
The formation program, with its theme, “Sharing Our Talents and Gifts,” was dynamic, featuring moments of prayer, fun, games, and discussions. The sessions focused on three main topics: Reflective Films, Relationships, and Lifelong Commitments, presented by Fr. Ambrose and Sr. Trinh, with the assistance of volunteer teacher-animators who facilitated discussions. The first session took place on Friday evening after the participants arrived, registered, prayed the Rosary, and had supper. It involved viewing inspirational short films, followed by group discussions where participants shared key lessons and takeaways.
Reflecting on the film, Michaelyne Tomo remarked, “Giving up is not an option, and keep your heart open always.” Another participant commented on a short film titled “Value System,” saying, “Parents have the primary responsibility to educate their children.” The importance of sharing experiences, talents, and gifts was emphasized during the discussions.
The next day began with a morning exercise session featuring Zumba and mindful meditation. After a hearty breakfast, the second session, focused on Relationships, was presented by Fr. Ambrose. He introduced the acronym L.I.F.E. to describe different types of relationships: L for Love, I for Infatuation, F for Friendship, and E for Exploitation. Fr. Ambrose emphasized the importance of recognizing the different types of relationships in one’s life and the qualities of healthy relationships. He also touched on the Sacrament of Marriage, explaining that marriage is a lifelong covenant, not a contract. He stated, “Sadly, the media is distorting what true friendship is. Friends are people we’re close to, someone we can trust and connect with emotionally.” The session concluded with participants reflecting and resolving to pursue a life of joy and happiness.
In the following session, Sr. Trinh presented on Lifelong Commitments, drawing on Bible verses about commitment, including one from Proverbs: “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans.” She also highlighted commitments in society, such as lifelong learning. “When we are committed, we care about what we are doing. Lifelong commitment is enduring dedication,” Sr. Trinh explained. Since all participants were young women, she highlighted women in society who had made significant commitments to the greater good, challenging the participants to do the same in Papua New Guinea.
The program culminated with a beautiful Eucharistic celebration. In his homily, Fr. Ambrose reflected on the scripture of the day, which spoke of prisoners and slaves. He said, “We are all sometimes slaves to sin, and at times, we even enhance that, but we are called to be free.” He invited participants to consider what sets them free and to avoid being enslaved by anything. “Live your life freely, grounded in your convictions and committed to the Lord, who only wants what is best for you,” he added. He also reflected on the nature of love, saying, “1. Love is not just a feeling, 2. Love is a decision and a commitment, and 3. Love is forever,” encouraging participants to commit to living authentically.
The program concluded with evaluations of the Oratory animators’ efforts throughout the year and planning for the closing of this year’s Oratory program and the next year’s activities. Gratitude was expressed to everyone present for their dedication in sharing their talents and gifts.
