Colle Don Bosco, the Becchi, Italy, 21 September 2024 -- First of all, let me introduce myself: Lui Leiofi Sueina, a young Salesian from Samoa, which is part of the Pacific Delegation, and therefore associated with the Australia-Pacific Province. I and another Samoan Salesian confrere, Falefa Elia, have the privilege of attending what is called, in Italian, a ‘Corso Respiro ’ which could be broadly translated as a ‘Breather', a time for renewal for people living and working in a missionary context. This course is run by the Missions Sector, and this particular six-week event is in English. From time to time we will offer a reflection based on our experiences. One, by Falefa, has already been published. Enjoy!
Today, I encourage you to deeply reflect on the contribution of the unidentified young boy who possessed only a few items: bread and fish. The young boy's simple offering of bread and fish to the Lord was able to feed a hungry crowd that would have otherwise required an amount of bread worth 200 days of wages. It teaches us that even our small acts of kindness or contributions can have a bigger impact than we imagine. We don't need to be rich or famous to help others. Just like the boy, we can offer what we have, and it can become something great used with love and good intentions. Often, it's not about the size of what we give, but the heart behind it. In life, there are many moments when we may feel unnoticed, just like the boy whose name was never mentioned. However, our actions, no matter how small, play an important part in the bigger picture. Actions speak louder than words.
Let us also reflect on the life of the young saint, St. Dominic Savio. His spiritual profile, narrated by Don Bosco in "The Life of the Young Dominic Savio" (1859), presents him as a perfect and shining example of what it means to live a life of faith, virtue, and true missionary zeal. Dominic was born in San Giovanni da Riva on April 2, 1842. In 1853, they moved to Moglia, and on October 2, his father took him to Becchi, where he met Don Bosco. We both knew some good deeds of his work. The young saint offered his life through the grace of God and was the instrument of God's work through other young people too. Don Bosco was amazed: "I saw in that young man a mind entirely in accord with the spirit of the Lord, and I was astonished, considering the works that the grace of God had wrought at such a tender age." Frank and determined, Dominic told him: "I am the cloth, you be the tailor... make a beautiful garment for the Lord..."
As I walk around these beautiful places, the house where he passed, the small Chapel, and his grave. I remember young people who were facing violence and abuse. The young people who are neglected in their societies and communities. Young boys and girls who live in fear because of their beliefs and faith. I will continue to pray for their souls so that they may receive the grace of God day by day. I pray for those who are struggling with loneliness, and feeling isolated from the world around them, and for those who are searching for meaning and purpose in their lives. Amen
