Enchanting musical: Don Bosco’s dream when he was nine

Gabutu, Port Moresby, PNG, 20 August 2024 -- On 15 August 2024, Don Bosco Technical School in Gabutu, Port Moresby, staged a musical based on Don Bosco's childhood dream at the age of nine. The entire school community, along with special guests, including religious congregations, members of the Salesian Family, children from the DB Gabutu Learning Center (Champions), and elementary pupils from Bereina, gathered to witness the performance. The play poignantly highlighted the parallels between Don Bosco's era and the present day, emphasizing a shared vision and mission: to nurture a heart that transforms wolves into lambs.

The students enthusiastically auditioned for various roles, whether big or small, showcasing their passion and dedication to bringing Don Bosco's story to life. The role of Little Johnny, a young Don Bosco, was awarded to Rhysurn Baim from 10 Saiz, who captured the innocence and curiosity of the character with great charm. Paul Aisi from 9 Magone skillfully portrayed the character of John, embodying the strength and determination of a modern-day Youth Minister. The role of Don Bosco himself, in all his wisdom and compassion, was magnificently brought to life by John Vanua from ITC 1 Elec A, whose performance resonated deeply with the audience. Offering the supporting roles are Elizabeth Alodi of STC MVT A as Mama Margaret and her real-life small sister Ruth Alodi of STC HWI A who portrayed the role of the Celestial Lady.

The cast was drawn from all year levels, with performers ranging from Grade 9 to the Short-term Course students, reflecting the inclusive spirit of the production. Each student brought their unique talents to the stage, contributing to a vibrant and dynamic ensemble that vividly depicted the life and dreams of Don Bosco.

One of the most memorable and applauded scenes of the musical was the powerful rendition of "Vision of a Dream," a reprise of "Whispers of a Dream," performed by Don Bosco, John, and the Celestial Lady. This scene captivated the audience with its emotional depth and the harmonious blending of voices, symbolizing the enduring vision of Don Bosco - a vision that continues to inspire and guide generations.

A standout feature of this year’s musical was the inclusion of original songs composed specifically for the production by Miss Rica Lavilla, who also served as the scriptwriter and the musical's director.

The students' performances, coupled with their unwavering enthusiasm and hard work, made this musical a truly special event. It was a testament to their commitment and the guidance of their educators, who helped them realize their potential both on and off the stage.
