Purwokerto, Indonesia, 15 August 2024 -- Lampung is one of the provinces at the southern tip of Sumatra Island, Indonesia, with Bandar Lampung as its capital. The province of Lampung is often dubbed 'Little Indonesia', which has amazing tourism potential. The population of Lampung is around 9.2 million, of which 77.208 people or 1 percent of the total population are Catholic. With a limited number of Catholic people in the Diocese of Tanjung Karang, it does not mean that there are no Salesian vocations from Lampung. Actually, there are three Salesian priests, one perpetual lay brother and one novice. Of these three Salesian priests, Fr. Antonius Widianto is the new ordained priest on August 14, 2024. Fr. Widianto was ordained in the Church of Saint Joseph Purwokerto along with a Diocesan priest, Father Robertus Dani Putra Setiawan, and a Deacon named Petrik Yoga Sasongko. Bishop Christophorus Tri Harsono, as the Bishop of Purwokerto Diocese, accompanied by more than 100 priests, ordained the two new priests and the new deacon.
In his homily, Bishop Tri Harsono invited the new priests to reflect and realize that a new priest is ordained in the Church to answer God's love, which is so perfect, and the new priests must love God perfectly too. Bishop Tri Harsono also said that a priest is expected to be aware to help the people of God. This means the people's faith grows and develops because of the service and assistance of the priests.
Fr. Widianto comes from a pluralistic family. Most of his families are Muslim. However, his family is very open and tolerant, allowing him to choose to become a priest and his sister to become a nun. Fr. Widianto, who chose the ordination motto “Blessed be the Lord, because of His steadfast love.” (Ps 31:21), will become a member of Dominic Savio community, Bakti Mulia, Purwodadi.
