Myanmar, 31 July 2024 -- In Myanmar Buddhist culture, there are five categories that people highly admire and respect. They are Buddha (god), religion, monks, parents, and teachers/masters. Since parents are in the same rank of Buddha as they believe, the Myanmar people pay homage to their parents after their Lenten season, begging for their pardon and offering gifts to them every year.
As for the Catholics, they mark the feast day of Sts. Joachim and Anne as the Parents’ Day, i.e., the day of begging for pardon from the parents and of showing gratitude to them. Due to many pastoral reasons, the feast is always moved to the nearest Sunday, so that all the faithful can join the occasion. This is why, this year a Salesian parish of the Infant Jesus celebrated it on 28th of July. The ceremony began with the Mass at 9:00 a.m., presided by Fr. Mariano Soe Naing. In his homily, he articulated very well about the unconditional love and concerns of parents which are always shared with their children in abundance.
After the Mass, the young people paid homage to the parents, the elders, the priests, and the nuns in the church itself. Donations and gifts were also presented to each of them by different groups and families. In the afternoon as well, parents’ songs, traditional dances, and a short play portraying the love of parents were presented on the stage in honour of the parents. All the participants were very much touched, and delighted with all today-program.
