New Superior for the Province of Vietnam

RMG-ROME: January 11, 2015 - During this winter session of the Council, the Rector Major, Fr Ángel Fernández Artime, having heard the opinion of his Council, has appointed Fr Joseph Nguyen Van Quang, SDB as the new superior for the Province of Vietnam, for the coming 2015-2021.

Fr Joseph was born 66 years ago in Nam Dinh, south of Hanoi. He entered the Tram Hanh novitiate in 1968 with the Servant of God, Fr Andrej Majcen (1905-1999) as his Novice Master. He was in one of the last groups of novices guided by Fr Majcen. Fr Joseph professed the following year on August 14, 1969. He was ordained in Dalat, on Sept. 1 1976.

When the situation was more favorable to carry out some work in Phuoc Loc, a community was canonically established there in 1991. Fr Joseph started this community as its first Rector and in the course of the years he changed roles as Parish Priest and Vicar of the house. Meanwhile, in 2000, the Committee of Tan Thanh District had given permission for a Training Center -run by the Salesians- to prepare local youth as technicians for the factories nearby. Presently he is reappointed Rector of this thriving Vocational Training Center and member of the Provincial council.

The Vietnam Province, dedicated to St John Bosco, has 300 confreres assigned to 20 canonically-erected houses in Vietnam and Mongolia. Among them are 146 priests, 41 Brothers and 88 seminarians. There are 25 confreres who are of Vietnamese origin, living in other Salesian Provinces of EAO, America and Europe. But another numerical fact is that, up till now, there are about 100 Vietnamese confreres who became missionaries serving in 36 other provinces around the world.

As a new practice of Fr Ángel Fernández Artime SDB, the new Provincial is first called by the Rector Major for a talk before the start of his ministry of animation and government. For Fr Joseph Nguyen Van Quang SDB, the personal talk will be held at the end of this coming March. So, both he and the outgoing superior -Fr Joseph Tran Hoa Hung SDB- have decided to have the new Provincial's inauguration during their Provincial Day on May 26, 2015.

Our heartfelt thanks also to Fr Joseph Hung for his service as Provincial during the past 2009-2015.
