Don Bosco Youth Centers, Metro Cebu, Philippines, 16 October 2023 -- The sight of the past two years is nothing short of horrible: empty classrooms, empty gyms, and empty playgrounds. Rebuilding our youth centers means bringing back the laughter, fun, and activities to break the silence and isolation that the pandemic brought. Nothing attracts youth better than games and sports.
The Don Bosco Youth Centers in Metro Cebu have organized invitational sports events for the past two weeks. These involved the youth of Pasil, Lourdes Parish, DBTC, and Lawaan in three sports events of basketball, volleyball, and futsal. Sports, perhaps, is the best defroster. The empty silence of our gyms is once again filled with the passion and energy of youth.
Delegations from the different youth centers, together with the Salesians, visited Lourdes Parish for the past few nights to compete in the games. One can discern that athletes are still waking their skills and talents from the two-year slumber, but the rising competition among teams and that passion for winning is fueling a resurgence of youthful vigor and blaze.
Through the coordination of the different Salesian youth directors, these invitational games are but an introduction to the planned inter-DBYC Sports League, which will be launched in the coming weeks. Coupled with the other activities of the Salesian Youth Movement for these youth centers, the Salesian Youth Ministry is emerging better and stronger.
