By Youth Outreach

Hong Kong, China, 11 September 2020 -- The 'Youth Outreach' is well known in Hong Kong during its almost 30 years (foundation in 1991) of consistent dedicated work for the youth at risk, starting from the night services in the streets of the city to assist the young people who are in the streets. The founder, Salesian priest Fr Peter Newberry, with a group of enthusiastic lay people and financial and institutional support of the wide public in Hong Kong slowly developed these services around the present centre - 15 story building - headquarters of YO, with more than 100 staff, serving the youth at risk at Sai Wan Ho, Hong Kong island, 24/7.

In his recent communication Fr Peter shares: "We have just been successfully nominated by the SAR Chief Executive for funding support by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust for a grant of HK$30.75 million over four years to launch a program called “Reaching the Unreachable: Mental Health Programme for At-risk youths and their Families.”

A new video in English, with a narration during the virtual visit around the Youth Outreach services by Ms. "Bun" - a Hip Hop dance teacher and staff, who was a former street kid just only 6 years ago. From the street to the top floor you get quite a clear insight into the integral service for youth at risk: Hang Out (7/24 services) with the social workers available all the time, street rover, crisis prevention centre, transitional housing, school of Hip Hop, Youth Employment start-up program (7-Eleven, Hair salon, school of design, restaurant, IT development workshop), psychological services, volunteer services, 24/7 online services and many other events during the year.

NB: Youth Outreach (Chinese: 協青社) is a non-profit organization in Hong Kong established in November 1991 as a crisis intervention centre for youth. In the years since its establishment, the organization has been devoting its services to help youth at risk or in critical - crisis condition. The Chinese name of Youth Outreach is special where the second character "青", meaning green or youth, symbolizes youthfulness and liveliness, and its character position between "協", meaning aid, and "社", meaning society, creates the picture of youth being supported and cared for.

The video presentation of Youth Outreach offers a good inspiration for any Salesian urban setting around the EAO region. Don't miss it!
