Port Moresby, PNG, 22 July 2024 -- After 25 fruitful years of educating young Papua New Guineans from around the country with Christian values and faith, the Don Bosco Technological Institute (DBTI) celebrates its 25th Silver Jubilee this year with several events to commemorate this milestone in the institution's history.
On 11 May 2024, the APEC Haus in Port Moresby hosted the 25th Silver Jubilee Fundraising Dinner, graced by stakeholders, sponsors, past pupils, donors, members of the Catholic clergy, family, and friends. The event celebrated DBTI's achievement in reaching 25 years and aimed to maintain partnerships with stakeholders to advance the institution's development, playing a key role in educating young men and women to become “good Christians and upright citizens” as St John Bosco intended.
DBTI has always prioritized providing quality education for the betterment of the country, despite challenges in the national education system. This commitment was highlighted by DBTI President Fr Ariel Macatangay, SBD, during his welcome address. With 21 technology programs offered, he emphasized the goal of ensuring that the nation's young citizens possess healthy minds, God-fearing hearts, and skilled hands to be productive community members. This sentiment was echoed by the Guest Speaker and Member for Moresby South, Honourable Justin Tkatchenko. “The Catholic Church has done a lot towards educating young Papua New Guineans,” he said. “The takeaway from this event is that we can all achieve so much through effort and partnership for the nurturing and excelling of our young people,” he added, stressing the importance of collaboration to ensure that young men and women have access to the quality education they deserve. Hon. Justin Tkatchenko has been a strong supporter of upgrading and developing educational institutions in his electorate.
Further remarks celebrating DBTI’s Silver Jubilee were shared by alumnus Godfrey Morisa, Managing Director of GMT Automation, who elaborated on the importance of institutions like DBTI. He noted that DBTI has provided many past pupils, including himself, the opportunity to access quality education and achieve their dreams and goals.
DBTI was established in 1999 with its first batch of 75 young men as pioneer students. It opened its doors to female students in 2001, creating a diverse educative community. Today, the institute has over 900 students enrolled in 21 different technological programs.
