Don Bosco’s Relic Visit in Brunswick

By Afia Enosa SDB

Brunswick (Melbourne), Victoria, Australia, 3 August 2023 -- The Salesian Community in Brunswick welcomed the Relic of Don Bosco that is embedded in a life-sized wax statue as part of the centenary celebration. The Relic holds great importance as it serves as a symbol of unity, faith, and encouragement. It represents the teachings and legacy of the man whom people called the "Friend of the Young,", who worked tirelessly for the good of disadvantaged young people.

The presence of the Relic in Don Bosco Youth Centre was an extraordinary experience, creating a sense of excitement and pride among those who know Don Bosco from Salesian colleges, technical schools, vocational training centres and parishes. "It’s fantastic to see Giovanni Bosco in the centre, giving us a sense of hope and strength," said Fr. Jan Walenciej (Director). Lay people, volunteers, families, and friends visited the Relic and spent quiet time in prayer and reflection. Many came to offer intentions for their families and studies, pray the rosary together, and later conclude with the Divine Mercy Chaplet.

Residents from the Hostel came in numbers to visit and pray together in groups. Invited guests and friends from their nationalities joined them as they paid tribute to the sole master who gave his life for the young. "Don Bosco’s mission is truly enormous in my country (India). Friendly brothers and fathers, active among the young people just like you guys here. I used to play soccer with them. Seeing the relic of the man himself is just an amazing experience. I’m so happy!" one of the hostel residents exclaimed.

Father Phil Gleeson (Rector) was the main celebrant for the Eucharistic celebration as friends, hostel residents, confreres, and faithful lay people gathered to celebrate the life of Don Bosco. The relic was in the community house for two days before being transported to Saint Margaret Mary’s Parish where other liturgical ceremonies and prayer times were planned.

Father Anthony Nguyen (Parish priest) welcomed Don Bosco into the parish together with parishioners. Masses were offered in Vietnamese, Italian and English in their scheduled times. Father Jan Walenciej and Father William Matthews (Provincial) celebrated mass among many local church comers on Sunday. Father Jan reminded the congregation about the gift of Don Bosco and his dream of the two pillars.

We give thanks to God for the gift of Don Bosco for his life of service and dedication to bringing hope and education to the young. Let us continue to pray to our Blessed Mother Mary to intercede for us and grant all our needs. Saint John Bosco, pray for us!
