By Fr. W. Matthews, SDB

Ascot Vale, Melbourne, 28 June 2023 -- As part of the school holiday program led by two young diocesan priests and some community leaders, a group of migrant children from Burmese backgrounds visited the Salesian Province Centre in Ascot Vale on Monday 26 June.

Upon arrival, they were treated with a variety of foods for a light lunch in the child safe environment of the Province Centre. Fr Will Matthews SDB, the Provincial who was born and raised in Burma, gave a presentation on the life of St John Bosco and Salesian education around the world. The children were then taken to the chapel for a sacred moment and to have a chance to see a small relic of St John Bosco.

Fr Will also explained to them about the centenary celebrations of the arrival of the Salesians in Australia in 2023. He invited them to embrace the opportunity to see the relic statue of Don Bosco from Hong Kong visiting Melbourne in July and August.

Following the visit to the chapel and a group photo taken, the children and their leaders continued their pilgrimage to St Francis Church in Melbourne. Fr Will Matthews guided them for a tour around the church and explained to them the significance of the church as the first Catholic one in Victoria, and the first cathedral.

The multicultural country Australia is a home to people from all over the world and children are given the opportunity to study and work hard to build up the country’s better future.
