Interview with the most senior EAO Salesian Bulletin Editor

By Bollettino Salesiano June 2022 issue

Melbourne, Australia, 24 June 2022 -- At present there are 10 different Salesian Bulletin editions in the EAO (East Asia Oceania) region of 12 provinces and 5 delegations: China (Hong Kong), Australia (Melbourne) Japan (Tokyo), Thailand (Bangkok), Philippines (Manila and Cebu), South Korea (Seoul), Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh), Papua New Guinea-Solomon Islands (Port Moresby), Cambodia (Phnom Penh) and Myanmar (Anisakan). There are many Salesians, Salesian family members and lay mission partners involved in this important charismatic work started by Don Bosco in 1877.

Thanks to the Italian version of the Salesian Bulletin, the Bollettino Salesiano (June 2022) we gain a deep insight into the life and mission of the most senior editor of 'Don Bosco's Magazine' - Fr Frank Freeman (Australia - Pacific Province, AUL) who has already been entrusted with this beautiful mission for 39 years. In the 4-page interview (article signed by O. Pori Mecoi) we read about Fr Frank's roots in his native Gippsland (State of Victoria, 95km from Melbourne), then his Salesian vocation story since the novitiate in Sunbury (Melbourne) 72 years ago.

Then after ordination in 1960he spent almost 40 years committed to the education of young people in 5 different Salesian schools, and since the early 80's began his journey with the Salesian Bulletin in Australia. It is interesting to learn of his professional preparation and involvement in the 'AustraLasian Catholic Press Association' (Australia, New Zealand and Oceania) and involvement that has contributed so much to his journalistic preparation by way of 'peer education'.

Thanks to Fr Giuseppe Costa (former editor of Italian SB edition) Fr Freeman received valuable guidance, while over more recent years he has been sharing his experience with many lay mission partners involved in the Australian Salesian Bulletin editorial team.

The full version of the interview in Italian can be downloaded from the 'Il Bollettino Salesiano' version online, where this 90-year-young Salesian also answers questions about his vocation, the Salesian Congregation in Australia and in the Pacific and about his view of Australian youth.
