Gabutu, Port Moresby, PNG, 31 may 2022 -- The Solemnity of Mary Help of Christians was celebrated on 24 May 2022 with pomp and splendour by the Salesians, staff, and the students at Don Bosco Technical School, Gabutu.

Bishop of Kerema Diocese, Bp. Pedro Baquero sdb, celebrated the Eucharist together with Fr. Pedro Sachitula, Rector and Fr. Ambrose Pereira, Spiritual Moderator. Fr. Angelo Fazzini celebrated the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the congregation.

Bp. Pedro began his homily with the question: “How many times do you mention the name Mary Help of Christians? How much does it mean to you?” He then went on to say that having devotion to Mary Help of Christians is part of our nerves and is a part of our identity as Bosconians.

Dwelling on the Gospel (Jn 2: 1-11) he illustrated the need to trust Mary. She was there when the wine ran short. Every mother’s presence is always assuring as they are the ones that love, console, and protect us. “Mary the mother of Jesus is also our mother as she is always there to hold our hand, even when we don’t want her, she is always there for us. Her hand is always extended to each one of us”, said Bp. Pedro.

The statue of Mary Help of Christians stood radiant amidst fresh flowers, beautiful drapes, and vibrant light. The altar had the theme: ‘MARY, Queen of Peace and Love’. The students were dressed in their year level colours with the Strenna: ‘Do all through love.’ The entire setting together with harmonious voices was indeed a fitting tribute to honour the mother of Jesus, Mary Help of Christians on her feast day.

In preparation for the feast, a novena, singing practice and the Sacrament of Reconciliation prepared the students for the celebration. Salesian educators, Mr. Vincent Numbos together with the Music club spent hours of practice for the liturgy and the decorations were put together by Mr. Greg Kuheu and Ms. Joanne Eko with the help of the ITC2 students. Cultural dances and the offertory procession brought in a greater involvement. The celebration depicted the love and dedication the students have for the Blessed Virgin Mother. A lot of hard work was put into the celebration.
