"Mifala laek tok tenkiu lo Don Bosco"

By Br. Anthony Bataigela Wale, SDB

Henderson, Solomon Islands (PGS), 11 May 2022 -- The Don Bosco Technical Institute in Henderson, Solomon Islands, organized a food distribution on Thursday 5 May 2022.

The recipients were members of the Ferafalea and Baefuo communities residing at the Ranadi land filled site.

Fr. Fardajo Fernando (Sonny), who, on behalf of the Rector of DBTI Henderson, Fr. Casper Charles sdb who is still on his holidays, provided the funds and with the help of the staff, the goods were purchased and distributed to the families.

“During these trying times of the pandemic, most of our families here in the country are really struggling to make ends meet. These struggles are really felt hard by those who are at the peripheries of our society. Thus, we tried to at least provide a little just to help and to put a smile on these families’ faces”, said Br. Anthony.

The first community visit was Ferafalea. After the distribution, community leader and catechist Jack Wara, who was present to see the smooth flow of the short program said, “Mifala barava hapi fo gut en mifala laek tok tenkiu lo Don Bosco fo helpim mifala waitim oketa kaikai ya. Tenkiu tumas” (We are really happy indeed and we would like to say thank you to Don Bosco for helping us with these food stuffs. Thank you so much!).

John the leader and one of the elders of the Baefuo community stated that they were really happy with the distribution of food and more especially to reconnect back the friendship with Don Bosco. He added he felt that he, as the leader of his community had lost connection with the DBTI Henderson family for some time now and it was good to continue working together again.

These two communities are areas of the Apostolate in which DBTI Henderson provides basic literacy and numeracy programmes for the kids and for the young people, short courses on welding and sewing. Due to Covid-19, all schools in the country have been closed until further notice from the government.

Our gratitude to the Salesians and lay mission partners who initiated this apostolate mission, reaching the neediest ones in the society.
