Fifth group of Salesian Family in Myanmar:

Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians

By MYM social communication

Anisakan, Myanmar, 7 February 2020 -- Do you know how many Salesian Family Groups there are in the world? We have checked on the internet and the right answer is a total of 32 official groups - members of the Salesian Family today. However in our Vice-province of Myanmar we have only a few groups: SDBs (since 1939), FMA Sisters (since 1994), Past Pupils of Don Bosco and Past Pupils of the FMA. But since 2019 we can rejoice in the presence of another new group in our country - the Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians (MSMHC).

The first two communities in Myanmar are both in Chinh State, Kalay diocese, with the first Sisters present - Sr. Sabina Kim (superior), Sr. Bibiana and Sr. Julie (Ferrando Convent, Leitawhtan Tedim, Chinh State), working closely with the SDB Salesian community of Kalay Myo.

The Congregation of Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians (MSMHC), the first indigenous Congregation in North East India was founded on October 24, 1942, at Guwahati, Assam by the Venerable Stephen Ferrando, SDB, Bishop of Shillong. It has over 1500 members belonging to 60 ethnic groups working in 190 centres in India and 25 center in other 10 countries.

The MSMHC Congregation is organized in 6 provinces in India (Guwahati, Bangalore, Kolkatta, Tezpur, Shillong and Tinsukia) and their missions are extended to Europe (Italy - Delegation, Germany), to Africa (Ethiopia, South Sudan, South Africa, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique) and Hawaii (Oceania). The most recent presences are in Myanmar.

We are happy to welcome the 5th group of the Salesian Family in Myanmar and the 16th SF group within our EAO Region. We believe, that MSMHC members will inspire other groups of Don Bosco SF with their missionary zeal and radical witnessing life style!
