Former Provincial of the Vietnam-Mongolia Province

By VIE Social Communication Commission

Don Bosco Xuan Hiep Church, Thu Duc, Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam, 1 February 2020 – At 8 o’clock on 01 February 2020, the Archbishop of Ho Chi Minh City Archdiocese, Joseph Nguyen Nang, celebrated the funeral mass for Fr John Nguyen Van Ty, SDB, the former provincial of the Vietnam-Mongolia province. There were three other bishops and more than 180 priests from other dioceses and congregations who concelebrated with him.

The brief biography of Fr John was read before the entrance song. Archbishop Joseph said some words before celebrating the Mass. He reminded people about joy in the Catholic faith when a good Christian, a holy priest has passed away to return to God. He mentioned the dedicated services of Fr John, not only in the Salesian Congregation but also for the needs of the Church in Vietnam and evangelization in the world. He prayed to God to receive Fr John into His mercy and asked Fr John to pray for everyone to imitate his services for God and others in this world's journey.

In his homily Fr Provincial, Joseph Nguyen Van Quang SDB, emphasized the dedicated services of Fr John Ty for young people and souls in his 76 years of life, 59 years of Salesian consecration and 49 years of priesthood. Fr John always loved and served with his whole person, talents and zeal, dedicated himself even running in risks for the mission to the young, especially in difficult periods in Vietnam since May 1975 when the communists took over the country and expelled all foreign missionaries. At the end of the homily, Fr Provincial prayed to God to bring Fr John into His eternal life of love and happiness.

After the communion Fr. Provincial expressed his gratitude to the Superiors of the Salesian Congregation, the archbishop, bishops and relatives of Fr John Ty and all people who had visited, consoled Fr John in his last days and celebrated mass and prayed for his eternal life. Right after that Fr Provincial offered the last rites for the dead before bringing Fr. John to be buried in the Salesian cemetery at Tan Thinh parish, Hoc Mon, Ho Chi Minh city.

Kindly continue to pray for Fr John Nguyen Van Ty in order for God to bring him face to face with him in eternal happiness.
