10th EAO Salesian Cooperators Congress

By Ms Teresa Huong, ASC

HCM, Vietnam -- On 24 September, the EAO World Councilor of the Salesian Cooperators Association, Mr. Philip Yu (CIN province) sent out the convocation letter for the Tenth EAO Salesian Cooperators Regional Congress to be held at Xuan Loc, Vietnam from 23- 26 July 2020 with the theme 'LOVE, LIVE for and SERVE the Young'. The 'For the Young Project' initiative from the 2017 Tokyo EAO Congress in each province is at the centre of attention. Moreover, after 6 years, the present Delegates and Salesian Cooperators Delegates will elect the next World Delegate (2020-2026).

The convocation letter, dated 24 September, is addressed to all (almost) 2500+ Salesian Cooperators of the East Asia - Oceania Region, their Delegates, World Coordinator and World Delegates SDB and FMA as well to all 12 SDB and 10 FMA provincials of our Region. The Vietnam ASC province (Coordinator Ms Therese Huong) strongly supported by the SDB provincial of Vietnam-Mongolia Fr. Joseph Quang, is already preparing the details of the 4 day program and will soon send the registration forms to all 7 EAO ASC provinces (China, Philippines North, Philippines South, Japan, Korea, Thailand-Cambodia and Vietnam) as well to the province-level Salesian Cooperator Centres in the following 7 countries: Australia, Mongolia, Samoa, PNG, Solomon Islands, Indonesia and Timor Leste. At present there are still 5 EAO countries without any Salesian CooperatorCentre - Pakistan, Laos, Malaysia, Fiji and New Zealand.

The general objective of the 10th EAO Congress is to share the fruits, experience and the lessons of the 'For the Young' Project learnt during the past few years. The Salesian Cooperators aim to reinforce their LOVE for the Young, LIVE their unique vocation with the Young and with the whole Salesian Family andalso SERVE more effectively the Young.

One of the necessary conditions of this 'Youth Project' is a closer link to the SDB and FMA Salesian Youth Ministry, especially to bridge the gap between the SYM (Salesian Youth Movement) or Missionary Volunteers and the Salesian Cooperators Association. For this reason the Vietnam organizers are also preparing some parallel sessions during the Congress for Young people (18-30 years) that may enhance the 'For the Young' Project in a concrete way.

The EAO Regional Congress has been held every 3 years since the 1st Congress in Hua Hin (1993) in the following venues: Manila-Batulao (1996), Hong Kong (1999), Cebu (2001), Seoul (2004), Macau (2008), Hua Hin (2011), Manila (2014), Tokyo (2017) and now in Vietnam-Xuan Loc (2020).
