Annual SDB Statistics 2016

By Our Own Correspondent

EAO, 3 February 2017 -- Thanks to the regular and patient diligent work of all 88 provincial secretaries, of Fr. Stefano Vanoli (Secretary General) and Fr. Francesco Maraccani (former Secretary General, until 2002) – we have again our statistics update to the 31st December 2015.

Our EAO region is among the three growing Regions of the Congregation together with Africa–Madagascar and South Asia, while the two Regions of America and two Regions of Europe are slightly diminishing in numbers.

Simple overview of the above table shows the steadfast growth of our Region:

  • Total of 1417 professed Salesians SDB (8 more than last year) and 51 novices = total of 1468

  • Total of 212 Salesian Brothers (L) among them 68 temporary professed – highest % in the Congregation!

  • Total of 325 Salesian candidates to the priesthood (Sc)

  • Total of 877 Salesian priests (P)

  • Total of 11 Salesian bishops (E)

In the same time the Worldwide Salesian statistics show a decrease of 131 SDB

  • From the total of 14.908 SDB (2015) to the total of 14.777 SDB (2016).

  • Total number of professed SDB is 14.586 (including the 128 Salesian bishops)

The good news is the stable number of Salesian novices – 432, backed with much less drop outs during the novitiate time than 10 years ago. In the same time we humbly acknowledge that our Congregation is still blessed with the highest number of novices among all religious congregations: 181 novices in Asia, 143 novices in Africa, 59 in America and 49 in Europe.

According the specific categories of the confreres:

  • Salesian Brothers - temporary professed: 213

  • Salesian Scholastics - temporary professed: 1945

  • Salesian Brothers – perpetually professed: 1445

  • Salesian Priests perpetually professed: 10.079

  • Salesian Permanent Deacons: 18

  • Salesian Scholastics perpetually professed: 639
