By Fr. Stefano Vanoli, SDB

Thanks to the hard and patient work of all 90 provincial secretaries, of Fr. Stefano Vanoli (Secretary General) and his predecessor Fr. Francesco Maraccani (until last July 2002 was for 18 years the Secretary General and until last October 2015 was the Procurator General of the Congregation) – we have finally the SDB statistics update to the 31st December 2015.

Our EAO region is among the three growing Regions of the Congregation together with Africa – Madagascar and South Asia, while the two Regions of America and two Regions of Europe are slightly diminishing in numbers.

Growing EAO Region - statistics on 31st December 2015

Simple overview of the above table shows the steadfast growth of our Region:

  • Total of 1408 professed Salesians and 76 novices = total of 1484 Salesians (increase of +47)
  • Total of 205 Salesian Brothers (L)
  • Total of 190 Salesian candidates to the priesthood (Sc)
  • Total of 711 Salesian priests (P)
  • Total of 12 Salesian bishops (E)

In the same time the Worldwide Salesian statistics show a decrease of 121 SDB

  • from the total of 15.153 SDB (2014) to the total of 15.032 SDB (2015).
  • Total number of professed SDB is 14.586 (including the 124 Salesian bishops)

The good news is the increase of Salesian novices – up to 446, backed with much less drop outs during the novitiate time than 10 years ago. In the same time we humbly acknowledge that our Congregation is blessed with the highest number of novices among all Catholic Church Congregations today.

According the specific categories of the confreres:
