Installation of the 15th China Province Superior

By Fr. Carlos Cheung, SDB

Hong Kong, 24 June 2018 -- One day shy of celebrating the Memorial of the St. Joseph Cafasso, our confreres and the Salesian Family of the China Province (CIN), received a precious gift in the person of Fr Joseph Ng Chi-yuen, SDB, who was installed as its 15th Provincial Superior of the China province in Hong Kong.

The installation took place during the Holy Mass in Salesian House of Studies, Shaukiwan. Before Fr. Klement Vaclav, the EAO Regional Councilor representing the Rector Major and before the congregation, Fr Joseph professed the Creed. About 80 Salesian Brothers, Fathers and Joseph Cardinal Zen, the Bishop Emeritus of Hong Kong together with some Salesian candidates, Salesian Cooperators also witnessed the event.

Nearly three decades ago, Fr. Joseph Ng had been working in Boystown, Taiwan as Teacher, Rector, Novice Master and Parish Priest and earned his BA on Sociology in Loyola Marymount University, USA. He expressed his thanksgiving to the former Provincial Fr. Lanfranco Fedrigotti and asked for prayers of support to cope up his shortcomings and limitations for the next six years of service.

During the reception after the Holy Mass, the new Provincial shared his motto chosen for his priestly ordination: “Do whatever he tells you.” (Jn 2:5) Fr. Ng continued to stress that all Salesians are servants and called to do God’s will by the example of Mary. Therefore by strengthening our Marian devotion which is one of the strong characteristics of Salesian Spirituality, we will be able to say “Yes” as She did.

Fr. Ng hopes to receive more support from all confreres, members of Salesian Family and other provinces in our EAO region for this challenging task as a new China Provincial. By witnessing the Salesian charism, he believes all members of Salesian Family will make the dream of Don Bosco in China come true.

Installation event video (4 minutes) is available: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=BVUNnUUOyAg
