Chofu (Tokyo), Japan, 21 August 2021 -- The 75th anniversary of profession of Salesian priest Fr Gaetano Compri has been celebrated at the Salesian Parish in Chofu, Tokyo on 15 August 2021.

He professed his first vows at 16 years of age, on Don Bosco's birthday, 16 August 1946 at Chieri where Don Bosco had spent his teenage years.

In 1955, just 25 years of age, he arrived in Japan, where he did his theological studies under the guidance of the Venerable Fr Vincent Cimatti, and was ordained priest in 1958.

Fr Compri is now 91 years of age and has spent 66 years as a missionary in Japan. He was school principal for 22 years, and then for a further 20 years was in charge of the Cimatti Museum in Tokyo while also supporting the Cimatti Cause. He has written many books on education and catechetics. The last one on the Holy Shroud has also been translated into Chinese and Korean.

Now on YouTube has opened a philosophy course has also been adapted for non-Christians: 15 minutes each week, and already up to lesson 15. He speaks fluent Japanese.

The Diamond Jubilee was celebrated by the confreres at Chofu.
