(ANS - Rome) - The celebration of the bicentenary of the birth of Don Bosco is a favourable opportunity for us to study and make known his spiritual experience, which flourished in rich and diverse fruits of holiness. Fr Pierluigi Cameroni, Postulator General for the Causes of Saints of the Salesian Family, has edited a significant publication of 320 pages, "Like stars in the sky. Figures of holiness in the company of Don Bosco ", which has 166 members already glorified or on the way to sainthood: 9 saints, 117 Blessed, 12 Venerable and 28 servants of God.

"From Don Bosco to the present time we recognize a tradition of holiness which merits attention because it is the incarnation of the charism that originated with him and is expressed in many different forms and states of life," says Fr Cameroni. "These are men and women, young and old, religious and lay people, bishops and missionaries who let the distinctive light of the Salesian charism shine brightly in historical, cultural, social contexts that differ in time and space."

The criterion followed in the preparation of the volume was as follows: saints and blessed are those included in the proper liturgical calendar of the Salesians; the venerable and servants of God those who belong to some group of the S. Family, and the process of their beatification and canonization is promoted by the Postulator General of the Salesians of Don Bosco.

The aim of the work is to promote the heritage of sanctity that has come from the charism of Don Bosco, in the awareness that we are custodians of a precious heritage. In addition to the liturgical celebration, we ought to exploit fully the spiritual, pastoral, ecclesial, educational, cultural, historical, social, missionary potential offered by their causes for beatification and canonization. We should also invoke, and encourage others to invoke, the intercession of these brothers and sisters who are candidates for sainthood. This is a practical expression of faith in the communion of saints.

Writing in the preface, the Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, Cardinal Angelo Amato SDB, says: "The pedagogy of holiness, lived in joy, is the most relevant witness the Saints can give to the young people of today ... The Saints are people living in the heavenly Jerusalem that Providence has placed, like stars in the sky, to guide us towards the good, the true, the beautiful. Let us get to know our saints and let us imitate them!"
