Serving the Young: the fruits of a lifetime in education

BOLTON (UK): 28th April '04  --  The following information, through the courtesy of the Provincial Secretary in the UK, Fr. Patrick Sherlock, and RUALINK, will be of considerable interest to our East Asia-Oceania Region also.On Monday 26th April at a meeting of Salesian Headteachers at Thornleigh
House, Bolton, Don Bosco Publications launched their latest book 'Serving the Young - Our Catholic Schools Today' by Jim Gallagher SDB. For many years now Jim has been in great demand for his input at in-service days in so many parts of the UK. This book brings together so many of the treasures of
the Church's teaching on Education in a way that all who work in Catholic Schools can appreciate.

In 'Serving the Young', Jim Gallagher focuses on aspects of the religious dimension of education in a Catholic School: an educational community inspired by Christian faith and beliefs about people, life and the world. His main sources are the directives and guidance set out in Church documents. He also draws on his own experience, over the years, in a varietyof roles within Catholic education.

Many people find difficulty reading the Church texts on the nature and purpose of education, especially when they seem to be written in theological language. It is not always easy to set aside time for such reading and reflection in the busy schedule of our schools. However there are many hidden treasures in these texts and writings. They can and do inspire and challenge us to explore in greater depth the nature and purpose of education in a Catholic School. They may help us to re-examine some distinctive
features of the education which we should seek to provide in our schools. This is particularly necessary in these times of constant and rapid developments and changes in society, the Church and educational policy. Anyone who has responsibility for, or works in a Catholic School will find this book both instructive and inspiring.
