Sihanoukville centrre's success

by Joe Renesh sdb (missionary in Cambodia but currently resident at SDB community, Clifton Hill, Melbourne)

Sihanoukville: 11 October 2010 -- Over the past two decades “Don Bosco” in Cambodia has responded to the growing needs and demands of the young, through technical training. The few confreres in Cambodia have achieved remarkable progress, for instance, the Social Communication section begun by Fr Albeiro Rodas, a missionary from Colombia, who celebrated his 40th birthday yesterday.
A couple of years back, Fr Albeiro began the Social Communication Centre for local marginalised youth. Social communication “is a significant field of activity which constitutes one of the apostolic priorities of the Salesian mission” (C.43).  The devastating  fire on May 9th 2009 ,which completely destroyed the studio, did not put him down.  After a few weeks, his passion enabled him to begin again from scratch with help of benefactors, a number of them from the Netherlands. Presently, the studio has been rebuilt with more facilities than the previous entity consumed by the fire.
Today, October 11th, the fourth group of twenty young students are arriving from different parts of Cambodia to commence the scholastic programme 2010-2012.  Meanwhile, of the previous groups of students, eighteen are promoted to second year for further studies and projects. More interesting to note is that the past pupils have all gained employment in fields that include:  newspaper reporters, web masters, audio visual editors, English teachers and information technology teachers. The outgoing graduates are very pleased with their training and expressed their gratitude to Don Bosco Institute.  Above all, the social communication mission helped these young people to become socially competent and economically independent.
